20th September 2008 CICU

Saturday 20th September 2008 - I had a very unsettled night last night and the nurse had to call mummy and daddy at 6am to tell them I was bleeding in my chest and that my right lung had collapsed which was stopping me from breathing properly. She told them I would need a new chest drain put in and that it would probably be done before 8am.

Mummy and daddy got here straight away and I was feeling very poorly. My breathing was laboured and I was grinding my teeth (mummy and daddy hate it but it makes me feel better somehow).

The doctors came and saw me and said that they didn't know where I was bleeding from but once I had my chest drain in they would hopefully find out. They told mummy and daddy it may take a few days to be certain as they need to do lots of different tests.

Mummy and daddy were very upset as they could see I wasn't feeling well. They said they just wanted to pick me up and take me somewhere where I would be all ok but I know the doctors and nurses here are trying their best.

The doctors came to put my chest drain in at 12:30 and it took 3 hours for them to complete the procedure and get me stable. Mummy and daddy came back once it had been done and the nurse told them they had managed to drain a lot from my chest and I would remain paralysed for a few hours so they could see how much blood I was losing. I have had lots of new blood given to me by some very kind people which has helped me a lot. If I knew who they were I would say thank you!

Mummy and daddy are now waiting to find out what the doctors think is wrong and what they will do to make me better. I hope they find out quickly because I think mummy and daddy need my cuddles and kisses.

When mummy and daddy came to see me tonight I was still paralysed and sedated but I knew they were there. I started to cry but no sound came out and I couldn't open my eyes or move my arms but I did manage to shed a couple of tears. Daddy wiped one and mummy wiped the other. Mummy soothed me by singing in the night garden while daddy held my hand and my blood pressure dropped a little as it was quite high.

I am still bleeding about 5mls an hour so the doctors have told mummy and daddy I may need to go and have an exploratory operation tonight. This would mean I would have my chest opened so the doctors can try to find where I am bleeding from. Daddy will put an update on here tomorrow morning.
